Apple's built-in Camera app only scans 2D QR codes—it ignores 1D vertical-line barcodes on products, books, and packages. Use QR Code Reader & Generator to scan UPC, EAN, ISBN, Code 128, Code 39, ITF, PDF417, Aztec, and Data Matrix from your camera, Photos, or Files.
Step-by-Step: Scan Any Product or Package Barcode on iPhone
- Download and open QR Code Reader & Generator
Install QR Code Reader & Generator free from the App Store and tap the Reader tab (or the scan button on Home).
- Center the barcode in the camera viewfinder
Hold your iPhone 4 to 8 inches away from the UPC, EAN, ISBN, Code 128, or PDF417 barcode. Tap the flashlight icon in the top-right corner if the barcode is in low light.
- View, copy, or look up the barcode number
As soon as the barcode is recognized, the app displays the decoded digits or alphanumeric code, saves it to your Home history, and lets you copy or share it in one tap.
Tips for Scanning Glossy or Curved Barcodes
- Avoid direct glare: On shiny plastic packaging or beverage cans, tilt your iPhone 10–15 degrees so overhead lights don't reflect white glare across the black bars.
- Use the built-in flashlight in dim rooms: Tap the flashlight icon at the top right of the scanner screen to illuminate small EAN-8 or UPC-E barcodes.
- Scanning multiple items? Turn on Batch Scan in Settings so you can scan an entire shelf without leaving the camera view.
Why won't my iPhone Camera scan normal barcodes on boxes and books?
Apple designed the built-in iOS Camera app to scan 2D QR codes and App Clips only. It does not enable 1D barcode symbologies like UPC-A, EAN-13, Code 128, or Code 39.
Which barcode formats can QR Code Reader & Generator scan?
It scans UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-13, EAN-8, ISBN, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5 & ITF-14), Codabar, GS1 DataBar (RSS-14 & Expanded), PDF417, Aztec, Data Matrix, and QR Code.
